For me the the bridge photo brings memories of working (braking) out of Tracy in the late 1960's on the then-triangle San Joaquin Division (Tracy-Roseville-Fresno). I don't ever remember seeing the bridge opened for San Joaquin River traffic. Stockton was/is a deepwater port but as mentioned above not much in the way of large vessels went beyond there.
Trains heading east out of Tracy could go northward toward Stockton, Sacramento and Roseville, or at Lathrop, south to Fresno. The westside line directly out of Tracy also went south to Fresno through Los Banos and Firebaugh.
Because of the shape of the division, with three crew change points, we were often out of our home terminal, Tracy, for two to three days (and the 16-hour law was still in effect then). Since my wife was not very fond of that kind of away from home schedule, it was a factor in my leaving railroad service in 1969 for a more settled life.
