Santa Fe mixed trains (1960s)

Recently someone on this list inquired about those. Well, there's an article in the most recent issue of Passenger Train Journal (PTJ #248) on that very topic. The article describes a ride on one mixed train between Wichita and Pratt, KS in 1966. The article includes a map of Kansas showing other mixed train routes.
I believe a few routes in Kansas and eastern Colorado would still carry passengers in the caboose up to the advent of Amtrak.
