Something must be right about either the prices or availability of capital right now, because all the consolidators seem to be on the hunt, and heavily so. Mr. Gardner mentioned before selling to Watco, OmniTrax was trying very hard to buy the WSOR. Friends in the industry say Genesee & Wyoming is banging on a lot of doors right now, too. Pioneer Railcorp and Iowa Pacific were interested in the Grenada Railway when A&K Materials attempted to abandon a large chunk of the railroad a few months ago.
Bottom line, looks like a lot of consolidators have money and are looking for acquisitions. The one exception seems to be RailAmerica, who is still carrying a lot of debt from the acquisition binge in the early 2000s.
