Bob Church's book "Those Daylight 4-8-4's" confirms the September 14, 1956 date for the last use of steam on the San Joaquin Daylights between Bakersfield and Oakland Pier.
I'm not at a place where I can rummage through my records, so I can't cite specific dates. However, my recollection is that use of steam on the overnight "Owl", also between Bakersfield and Oakland Pier, ended at the same time. However, the "West Coast" used steam power between Bakersfield and Sacramento until mid-October and the Sacramento Daylight between Lathrop and Sacramento until early November. This was the last regular passenger steam assignment on the SP outside of the Peninsula Commute trains which lasted until January 22, 1957.
