It must be a senior moment. I can't think of a movie ending like you described. Even though the deraiment at the end of "The Train" wasn't a wreck, the camera angles showing the steamer turning a rail and bouncing over the ties was impressive. I wonder what actor Wolfgang Preiss' first reaction was after director John Frankenheimer told him to walk next to the locomotive as it left the rails.
