Soul Train originated in Chicago, and as most of us are aware, many blacks migrated north from the Mississippi Delta on the Illinois Central. The IC and the GM&O were celebrated in many blues songs.
Smokestack Lightning was inspired by the spectacle of steam locomotives at night. Railroads, I think, were still a large part of black culture at a time when whites were losing touch with our railroad heritage. The showed aired in LA at 11am for years (on KHJ Channel 9, if memory serves,) and I rarely missed watching it. R.I.P. Don
