A bit of ancient history. I was attending college in the Boston area 1948 - 1952 and have memories of seeing the earliest RDC's going into commuter service out of both North and South Stations. I think all three companies converted to them. The RDC's retired wooden, open vestibules, pot-belly coal stoves on the B&M. Also, this was about the time Jersey Central invented push-pull. (I found their first such cars in a Kentucky museum)
The RDC histories are easily available via GOOGLE. Yes, the first cars came out in 1949.
