Fusees used to fly left and right while switching on the Tidewater Southern. One engineer was in the habit of lighting a fusee and tossing it up and over the engine's cab so it would land on a crossing on the far side of the train. One evening in Turlock, such a fusee landed in the back of a pickup--which drove off with the driver seeming none the wiser (at least not before we got out of there). Monty White, RIP.
