Portola Railfan Day operation schedule released

The operation schedule for the WPRM Railfan Photographer Day has been released. This outlines the movements and schedule that we will be running. Also note the special instruction to the operating department crews that era-specific clothing will be worn.

This will also be a rare chance to see our UP Centennial 6946 in motion, as it will be participating in the festivities this year.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR 2007 FRRS RAILFAN PHOTOGRAPHER’S DAY

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 29, 2007 – 10 AM TO 10 PM

*** Note to all Operating Crews – NO baseball caps or purple T-shirts are to be visible at any time during this operating event. All crew members must have proper era-specific hats/era-specific dress shirts/overalls. At least 1 caboose on each train is to be open and available for the attendees to ride during each train move. All crew members are to be in proper position inside locomotive cabs/inside bay windows or cupolas of cabooses or on rear platform of rear cabooses during operations as per standard railroad operating practices of the era being recreated during this day event. ***

10:15 AM – TRAIN #1 – Caboose Train w/ FR&W H-12-44 1857
Boards passengers and departs from the west end of the Engine House on Track #1, operates to Malfunction Jct then counterclockwise around the Balloon Loop. Stops at Milward Switch to unload any passengers wishing to detrain. Train then proceeds on South Lead to end of track. Train then backs up, stopping at Parking Lot Ped Xing to Engine House to board any passengers waiting there to ride the train. Train then continues backward on South Lead to Milward Switch, stopping there again to unload any passengers wishing to detrain. Train then continues backward around Balloon Loop to Malfunction Jct into the clear on TK#1 at the Engine House.

10:35 AM – TRAIN #2 – UP/WP Large 1970s Train w/ WP GP20 2001
Train departs west from Track Rip #1 via Malfunction Jct counterclockwise around the Balloon Loop stopping with the first car stopped on top of Milward Switch. WP 2001 is then cut off of train and run to end-of-track and placed in the clear on TK#2. UP Centennial power set 6946/849 (plus possible special guest power) is then pulled off of storage location on Track #3 onto the South Lead, then backs down South Lead and couples into train standing at Milward Switch. This train and power remains stationary for 15 to 20 minutes for designated directed photo session (properly attired crew members are to remain in proper postions in cab and in rear caboose cupola). When complete, the UP Centennial power set is cut off from the train and returned to storage location on the east end of Track #3. WP 2001 is returned to the train from storage location on east end of TK#2, ties back onto the train at Milward Switch and does brake test. When ready, train is then pushed backward clockwise around Balloon Loop and back into the clear on Track Rip #1.

11:20 AM – TRAIN #3 – WP Passenger Train w/ WP 805-A/925-C/917-D
Train departs from Inside Balloon track, backing through Milward Switch, clockwise around Balloon Loop to a stop just past Malfunction Jct on TK#4 . Train moves forward counterclockwise around Balloon Loop past Milward Switch on South Lead to end-of-track. Optional 1 photo run-by past Milward Switch at this time. Train then backs clockwise on South Lead and Balloon Loop to clear of Malfunction Jct. Train then moves forward through gate into clear of gate and access road on West Pass track.

11:50 AM – TRAIN #4 – WP Short 1970s Freight Train w/ WP 707/712
Train departs from Ramp Track past Malfunction Jct counterclockwise around Balloon Loop past Milward Switch via South Lead to end of track. Train backs on same route past Milward Switch to short of Malfunction Jct. Train runs forward for photo run-by past Milward Switch stopping at Ped Xing next to parking lot. Train backs on same route to Malfunction Jct then onto Ramp Track into clear of Track Rip #1 switch.

12:00 NOON – All Locomotive Horns blow exactly at 12:00:00 Noon

12:15 PM – TRAIN #5 – Caboose Train w/ FR&W 1857
Train departs from west side of Engine House on Track #1, operates forward past Malfunction Jct counterclockwise around Balloon Loop stopping with cars on Sewer Crossing. Board any passengers and ground crew members who wish a ride back to the Engine House for Lunch. Run backward over same route to Malfunction Jct., stopping there to pick up ground crew members then continue on TK#1 to stop at west end of Engine House.

12:30 PM TO 2:00 PM – LUNCH BREAK

2:05 PM – TRAIN #6 – SP 1960’s Freight Train w/ SP 1100
Train departs from Dodgepole Siding through Milward Switch clockwise around Balloon Loop stopping past Malfunction Jct. Train backs around Balloon Loop counterclockwise to Milward Switch then via South Lead to end of track. Train runs forward (photo run-by) past Milward Switch to Malfunction Jct. Train then backs around Balloon Loop to Milward Switch into clear onto Dodgepole Siding.

2:40 PM – TRAIN #7 – UP/WP Large 1970s Train w/ WP 2001
Train departs from Track Rip #1 forward until caboose clears Malfunction Jct. Train then backs via Track #4 until lead locomotive clears Terminal Switch. Train then runs forward via Inside Balloon Track to Milward Switch then clockwise around Balloon Loop to just past Malfunction Jct. Train then backs around Balloon Loop to Milward Switch via South Lead to end-of-track at entrance gate. Train then runs forward past Milward Switch around Balloon Loop to Malfunction Jct. Train then backs around Balloon Loop to Milward Switch then via Inside Balloon onto TK#4 stopping clear of Terminal Switch. Train runs forward on TK#4 to Malfunction Jct until caboose clears Malfunction Jct. Train is then backed into Track Rip #1 clear of the Ramp Track switch.

3:10 PM – TRAIN #8 – SP 1960s Train w/ SP 1100
Train departs from Dodgepole Siding forward to Milward Switch. Train is backed eastbound on the South Lead and is stopped/parked here in the clear on the South Lead between the Sewer Crossing and the Track #4 switch until conclusion of movement of Train #9.

3:20 PM – TRAIN #9 – WP Passenger Train w/ WP 805-A/925-C/917-D
Train departs backward from storage location outside gate on West Pass. Train is moved backward past Malfunction Jct via Track #4 until lead locomotive clears Terminal Switch. Train then moves forward from Terminal Switch via Inside Balloon to Milward Switch then clockwise around Balloon Loop to Malfunction Jct. Train is then backed via Balloon Loop to Milward Switch to Inside Balloon then backed into clear of Sewer Crossing on Dodgepole Siding.

3:45 PM – TRAIN #8A – SP 1960s Train w/ SP 1100
Train held in clear on South Lead until conclusion of Train #9 movements, proceeds forward from South Lead to Milward Switch clockwise around Balloon Loop onto Track #4 until rear caboose is clear of Malfunction Jct. Train then moves backwards out museum gate onto the West Pass track, stopping clear of gate and access road on West Pass track.

4:10 PM – TRAIN #10 – WP Short 1970s Freight Train w/ WP 707/712
Train departs forward off of Ramp Track past Malfunction Jct onto Balloon Loop then stops with the rear caboose clear of Malfunction Jct. Train is then moved backwards via Track #4 and South Lead until lead unit is clear of Terminal Switch. Train runs forward via Inside Balloon to Milward Switch clockwise around Balloon Loop stopping past Malfunction Jct. Train then moves backward around Balloon Loop to Milward Switch via South Lead to end-of-track at main entrance. Train then runs forward to via South Lead to Milward Switch clockwise around Balloon Loop to Malfunction Jct. and stops. Train backs around Balloon Loop to Milward Switch onto Inside Balloon to Terminal Switch onto Track #4 stopping with the lead locomotive clear of Terminal Switch. Locomotives 707/712 are cut off of front of train parked on Track #4/South Lead.

4:30 PM – Locomotive Exchange between trains on Track #1 and Track #4
Locomotives WP 707/712 are run forward from Terminal Switch on Track #4 to past Malfunction Jct switch and stopped. Locomotive FRW 1857 is removed from Caboose Train outside engine house doors on Track #1, is run forward onto Track #4 stopping short of Malfunction Jct. FRW 1857 is then backed up Track #4 to Terminal Switch coupling into WP Short 1970s Freight Train parked on Track #4/South Lead. Locomotives WP 707/712 are backed from Malfunction Jct into Track #1 and coupled into Caboose Train on Track #1 outside engine house doors.

4:50 PM – TRAIN #11 – Short 1970s Freight Train w/ FR&W 1857
Train departs forward from Track #4 at Terminal Switch, running via Inside Balloon to Milward Switch then clockwise around Balloon Loop to past Malfunction Jct. Train then backs via Balloon Loop to Milward Switch then via South Lead to Ped Xing. Train runs forward past Milward Switch to Malfunction Jct then forward into Ramp Track until rear of train is clear of switch for Track Rip #1.

5:15 PM – TRAIN #12 – SP 1960s Freight Train w/ SP 1100
Train departs forward from storage location on West Pass, moving forward to Malfunction Jct onto Track #4 then onto South Lead until rear caboose is clear of Terminal Switch. Train is then shoved backwards on Track #4 onto Inside Balloon stopping short of the rear caboose blocking the Sewer Xing. Train is then cut so that rear portion of this train parked on Inside Balloon is clear of movement on Track #4. Rest of this train is moved forward on TK#4 so that Terminal Switch and Ped Xing is clear of parked equipment.

5:30 PM – TRAIN #13 – UP/WP Large 1970s Freight Train w/ WP 2001
** Complete repeat of TRAIN #2 operation setting up this equipment to be matched with UP Centennial set at Milward Switch/Sewer Xing area for after-dinner night photo session. **
Train departs west from Track Rip #1 via Malfunction Jct counterclockwise around the Balloon Loop stopping with the first car stopped on top of Milward Switch. WP 2001 is then cut off of train and run to end-of-track and placed in the clear on TK#2. UP Centennial power set 6946/849 (plus possible special guest power) is then pulled off of storage location on Track #3 onto the South Lead, then backs down South Lead and couples into train standing at Milward Switch. This train and power remains stationary through dinner break until the conclusion of the evening night photo session. When complete, the UP Centennial power set is cut off from the train and returned to storage location on the east end of Track #3. WP 2001 is returned to the train from storage location on east end of TK#2, ties back onto the train at Milward Switch and does brake test. When ready, train is then pushed backward clockwise around Balloon Loop and back into the clear on Track Rip #1.

DINNER BREAK – 6:00 PM TO 7:30 PM
