It must be the Darwin thing - there are railroads in Saudi Arabia.

The Ottoman Turks built the Hejaz Railway from Damascus to Medina (with a branch to Haifa). It's still there but not operational (the desert is good for preservation). Interesting - wood was in short supply so they used cast iron ties. There was an article about it in National Geographic years ago.

Saudi Arabia also has modern railways and over the years they got some retired U.S. passenger equipment.
