When they went to obtain funding as a New Start Project, they tried to get it from St. Cloud. They knew they could get it to Minneapolis, but not St. Paul. Even as it was, they could only get it to Big Lake, not St. Cloud. After Northstar got going, they came back the the Federal Goverment and asked for an extenstion to St. Paul, but got the new start for extension of Light Rail instead. So Light Rail will soon go to St. Paul. Once track work is done, Amtrak is to move to St. Paul Union Depot, if it hasn't happend already. It is possible that Northstar may someday go to St. Paul and St. Could, but not anytime in the near future. I believe they will extend it to St. Cloud before anything else happens. Also, if the state ever gets their act together, you will see Amtrak service to Duluth again via BNSF. I talked to BNSF Trainmaster in charge of Northstar, Darren Olson a year ago last October, and at that time, he said BNSF is all ready for all of it, it is just waiting for the Federal and State Goverments to get and give BNSF the money. Hope this helps.
