0They wanted to scare themselves, it says. But apparently, they didn't get scared fast enough! Then too, they were trying to be scared by some silly unreal fantasy; while ignoring a very real danger lurking there, that they should have been scared by but weren't.
Every time I read about something like this, it never ceases to amaze me that the human being actually likes to scare itself. Can't think of any other species stupid enough to do that on purpose. Maybe the species "homo sapiens" is not so feakin' smart and advanced as we all have smugly supposed -- afterall!
