I seem to remember from art history that Degas caused a stir by painting a family just getting down from a carriage. You could see a part of the carriage, and the horse's tail, but that was it. The critics complained that the painting should show the entire horse and the entire carriage.
I think RRP is looking for railroad cheesecake. Nothing wrong with that. But I like this photo as is. The mountains above, together with the pantograph and wires, and the pavement below, make two horizontal bands, the train being the third. It puts the viewer in the story that a more conventionally composed photo would not. You're standing there on the sidewalk, wondering if there is some place you can buy yourself a drink, and this train comes rumbling by.
