The LA Times piece on the BNSF coal train derailment at Mesa, WA, was a classic. Full of the kind of misconceptions that we would expect from the mainstream press tying to cover a railroad story. Contrary to what that reporter wrote, the train was NOT destined for Spokane. This route is NOT the only one leading to the PRB. Their description of there being only one "cut" through the Cascades (likely a reference to the Columbia River Gorge vs. Stevens and Stampede) is somewhat misleading. There are NOT just three trains a day using this route. Three COAL trains (give or take) at present, is perhaps what they meant. Just surprised they didn't make a reference to derailed coal-carrying "boxcars." Strange thing for me is that we photographed this same train just a number of hours earlier when it popped out of Blossburg Tunnel on Mullan Pass in the middle of a thunderstorm.
