A few interesting details regarding the extension of San Diegan service to Santa Barbara:
--Even though the length of the run did not require a fireman on the LA-Santa Barbara run, Amtrak
assigned one so that trains could take DTC block authority from the SP dispacther without
stopping the train (authority could not be copied by person at the controls).
--SP had sidings on this route with spring switches equipped with facing-point locks. Since the
cab cars were not heavy enough to disengage these locks in a trailing-point movement (unlike
engines), train crews running cab-car first had to stop and line these switches by hand when
leaving sidings.
--These cab cars could be somewhat temperamental with control issues, so it was decided the train
to Santa Barbara would run with the engine on the south end; this avoided the possibility of
having a cab car failure on the departure from Santa Barbara, with nowhere to turn the train.
Things, of course, have changed a bit in the intervening years.
