The Capitol Limited uses NS from Chicago to Pittsburgh. Between Chicago and Cleveland, it operates on an ex-NYC line and from Cleveland to Pittsburgh, it uses an ex-PRR line.

East of the Amtrak station in Pittsburgh, it continues on NS for a couple of miles and then enters onto CSX's ex-B & O line at "Bloom" and "Field" interlocking. The Capitol continues on the former B & O to Rankin where it enters CSX's ex-Pittsburgh & Lake Erie line to a point just east of McKeesport where it returns to CSX's ex-B & O line all of the way to Washington, DC.
