Boston's "Big Dig" or "Central Artery Project" was not a boondoggle. It was a very necessary project to replace an obsolete elevated highway. While I will never attempt to justify the costs, cost overruns and enlarged project scope, the fact is Boston is a better place for having this project done.
There's a billion dollar highway project (I think it's one mile long) being built in San Francisco, but this project, like most other highway projects (except the Central Artery) gets a pass.
What ever the costs of NYC Second Avenue, BART, or Amtrak, the pale to the annual costs of traffic accidents - $802 billion according to the National Safety Council - for an expenses that does not produce one passenger mile.
