The KFR has three jobs starting every Monday-Friday in Kettle Falls, WA. First up is the Quirk Turn, which is on duty at 0700. This job builds its train in Kettle, then heads up the line to Columbia Gardens, BC. Usually out between 0745 and 0900, depending on switching in the yard. It will do its work in Canada, then come back into the states and make it as far as its hours of service will allow. Usually, it makes it back across the border between 1500 and 1630. Next is the Valley/San Poil job. It is on duty between 0800 and 1000, depending on what it has going on that day. Generally, this job switches out the remainder of the inbound train from the BNSF that the Quirk Turn didn't use. Then, it will build the train for the run to Grand Forks, BC., and do other local work around Kettle. They only run up to Grand Forks (the San Poil line) twice a week, usually only making it to Grand Forks before going dead, coming back the next day. It is a crap shoot on what days it will run, sometimes going up Monday and Wednesday, sometimes Tuesday and Thursday, or some other combination of days. When they do run, they get out of Kettle in the early afternoon. Last for the day is the Kettle Turn, which is the interchange train to the BNSF at Chewelah, on duty at 1800. It is also generally the clean up job, as they will dog catch the Quirk Turn if they didn't make it all the way back to Kettle, as well as use their three or more locomotives to go and drag the San Poil train into town from wherever their tonnage caused them to stall. The Kettle Turn train can often reach the 10,000 ton range. Business on the San Poil has been good, with upwards of 50 loads a week coming out of Canada. Hope this helps.
