It's my understanding that the US Army did the same thing on Guadalcanal in WW2 once the Island was secured. I could find no evidence left around the Henderson Field area when I was there 5 years ago. The place was pretty sprawled out and occupied a lot of area what with with Army, Navy and Marines flying out of there.
