The dearth of Old Growth timber, due to many years of heavy logging, was also the reason for the closure of the large Weyerhaeuser mill in Snoqualmie, WA. It seems the newer, smaller diameter timber would fall through the rollers, and converting the machinery over was deemed too expensive.
