Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance had a great line about why people who are driving in vehicles are "watching TV"-versus those riding in the a "real" 360 degree state of awareness on a bike.
I once was sitting in the middle of Nadau Street on Alameda back before the corridor, no gates, but full crossing lights, and a two stories of train just sitting in the middle of the street. I watched in amazement, as I was hit in the side of an SD-7 at by a Gremlin which never hit the brakes, and was totaled. Fortunately, the driver wasn't hurt, and was just amazed that he "didn't see us".
He wasn't loaded, it was about 7 am on fine sunny morning, going against the sunrise (no sun), and long before the age of cells, pods, and droids, and went right into the side of the fuel tank, which left a small dent, and otherwise left us, un-damaged.
Obviously he was watching Channel 13, and we were on Chnannel 2?
