Actually the 75 km extension from the Uzbek border to Mazr al Sharif was completed during the Afghan war and is a main supply route, which avoids Pakistan, for shipping US military hardware and supplies across the former Soviet Union. Another line is being studied from the border into the areas controlled by the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance.
