Technically, Caterpillar does not own EMD, one of its Progress Rail subsidiaries owns EMD. But beyond that, when Caterpillar subsidiaries have brand names well known in the marketplace, those subsidiaries often retain those independent names under Cat ownership. You can review this extensive list of Cat subsidiaries to verify this:

Perkins (diesel engines), Progress Rail, and Carter Machinery (equipment dealership) are probably the most common names to US residents. Note that subsidiaries of these Cat subsidiaries (such as EMD) are not even on the list.
