I believe its much like the situation between UPS and Fedex. The customer evaluates what is offered by each vendor, and decides what is the best value for the money. Each vendor does their best to convince potential customers that they are the right choice.

Since the Santa Cruz Train is also advertising in the Silicon Valley area, they are also competing to some extent with the Train of Lights at Niles-Sunol.

It could very well be that some customers will ride both trains, simply because there are close together. Some years ago I and several family members flew to Colorado and rode both D&S and C&T. If the two railroads had not been within close driving distance, we very well may have chosen a different destination entirely.
