Peninsula Tunnel Trackwork

The Oregonian newspaper in Portland is reporting on its Oregon Live website that Union Pacific will conduct a track replacement project in the Peninsula Tunnel under north Portland Nov. 16-21.

The article notes that the work will go on 24 hours a day during the window. This would likely affect operations as follows:

Southbound or westbound trains that normally enter the north end of Albina Yard by way of the tunnel are would likely be re-rerouted down the UP line along Interstate 84.

The intermodal trains that normally pass through Albina Yard on their way to the UP intermodal facility at the former SP Brooklyn Yard would have to reverse directions at East Portland, where the line from the east intersects the north-south line. Eastbound intermodals out of Brooklyn would also have to reverse directions here.

This is right at the east end of the Steel Bridge. There is an overhead pedestrian walkway here that provides a good railfan platform, if you can put up with the rainy weather.

Eastbounds out of Albina Yard would simply cross over at East Portland to go up the hill towards Troutdale.

The extra movements at East Portland would add some temporary congestion here, which is also on the Amtrak "Cascades" and "Coast Starlight" routes through Portland.
