BART is not a high speed rail system - wasn't meant to be! It is also a local system not intended to be interconnected to anything. Didn't need to be! And still doesn't! So who cares!
There have been numerous oddball gauges used by public transit in this country over the years, not just by BART. Look the world over, and even more odd gauges appear - many still in service. So again - bit fat hairy deal!
Moreover, given the reality that differences in material and labor required to lay track at different gauges on any given r.o.w., is so negligible as to be unmeasurable; and given that the only difference in the cost of wheels sets and truck frames of different gauges is the price of a few hundred pounds of metal; there is virtually no significant price penalty for whatever gauge floats your boat.
So, after strike three is called here; Where's the beef? Why are you still stuck on this bit of mere trivia, after all these years?
