Exactly. Like it or not, the law (and the lawyers) are the ones who have made all of this stuff necessary. For starters, the police have NO SAY whatsoever as to how long it takes the coroner to get there. They are often an under-funded and under-staffed County entity, and it would not be unusual in Santa Clara County, for example, to have ONE deputy coroner on call on a busy Saturday night. He takes them in the order that they come in. If your dead body is number 5, well, get comfy because you're going to be standing around for a long time with people getting p/o'd at you for messing up traffic. It's not their fault---they can not "release" the body per se, it must be done by the coroner. If you don't like it, write your Congressman, but don't blame the cops.
As far as lengthy investigations, well, until YOU have sat on the witness stand and have been grilled by both the DA and the defense team, you really have no clue what you're talking about. Certain things must be done for a reason. There is an incredible amount of liability placed upon the police, and if they make the smallest mistake or forget/overlook one little piece of evidence, it could make or break the case. I understand the frustration, but there are no other options in today's litigious society. They've gotta do what they've gotta do.
