If it is a boxcar stand in the boxcar with your back to the B-end of the car where the hand brake is. The right side is on your right and the left on your left. The A-end is in front of you. If not a boxcar just imagine it. I believe the wheels are numbered R1-R4 and L1-L4 starting from the B-end.

Bonus information:
Locomotives are different and have a front and rear end. The front end is marked with a prominent letter "F".
