A small factoid: when I was a kid, we rented a house for a couple of years alongside the SP's Oakland-Hayward main (and near the west switch for the passing track). I got to know quite a few of the crewmembers who worked the Hayward road switcher as well as some who were in the hole waiting for a meet. Anyway, the SP had little metal buttons with safety slogans that I still recall: "Safe and Alive in 55" and "Accidents Nix in 56".
We moved in 1957 and I don't know if more slogans were put on future buttons. Those were fun times for a kid who was fascinated by the railroad. My brother and I were allowed many times to ride around the then-busy Hayward yard and industries, usually on Consolidation 2568, the regular engine for that crew. But we also rode Moguls, other Consolidations and once a couple of mainline miles and a set-out on 4169 (a 4-8-8-2 "Mallet", for those who aren't SP-knowledgable). Those were certainly different times...we even left our unlocked bikes near the depot and they were never stolen.
