The Lumber Monsters Rise From the Deep

In the March 2013 issue of TrainsMag, in the News & Photos section, lumber and wood product traffic was up 10.3%. I, along with several enthusiasts, speculated this was a harbinger of the lumber monsters' return.

From some of my folks up in Merced today--they were stopped at the old Espee line, waiting on a slow, long freight. From what they say it had a number of AMR boxcars mixed in. Well, four minutes into the trains' passing, they realize they left something behind, so they drive all the way across Merced and back, and by the time they get back to the crossing traffic is stopped up for several blocks, and the gates still hadn't gone up!

This is the first primary account I've heard of a lumber monster in recent months. To anyone interested in snagging one of these behemoths rolling over Tehachapi--happy hunting.
