1) "A Century of Southern Pacific Steam Locomotives" by Guy Dunscomb--my first major rail book.

2) "The Central Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads" by Lucius Beebe--his prose and all those
Steinheimer photos conspired with Dunscomb to ensure I'd be a lifelong SP fan.

3) "The Electric Way Across the Mountains" by Richard Steinheimer--Stein photos and the
exquisite improbability of the Milwaukee Road in the Far West. I've always considered
not having seen those electrics the greatest tragedy of my railfan life.
