Copper thieves get prison time, $5,000 restitution

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Two of three people convicted of stealing more than 500 pounds of copper from a railroad signal system near Wells in 2011 have been sentenced to a year and a half in federal prison.

U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden announced the decision Wednesday.

Forty-five-year-old Allison Peters and 54-year-old Timothy Bevel will also have to pay nearly $5,000 in restitution costs to Union Pacific Railroad. They were sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Robert Jones.

The third defendant is 49-year-old Theron Peters who is scheduled for sentencing next month.

Prosecutors say the railroad company noticed the missing copper around 2:30 a.m. on July 25, 2011. The trio was arrested hours later after a high-speed chase. The stolen copper and tools used for the heist were found along the chase route.
