I almost mentioned that in the blog post, but I do not know if the reason for the directors special had anything to do with the anniversary or not. On that Sunday one E and part of the train made a trip down to the Long Beach Harbor, so I think the reason for the trip may have had something to do with grain exports. The UP was then running a lot of unit SGLTB trains (Soviet Grain Traffic/Long Beach.)
