The reporting about the brakes and the engines sounded fishy- I thought that "bottling the air" if that's the correct term, was against the rules.
So I googled for air brake train handling rules, and the BNSF rules and the UP rules proscribe it.
I figured that rules follow the model, but we're talking Canada
So I found the CROR on line, dated 2008 ,noted to be "used by all RRs in Canada" and apparently current.
Pretty clear about how to secure cars on the main- set hand brakes, give a tug on the train to make sure they are holding, etc
Sure doesn't sound like one sets the air and walks away with the engine running without breaking a lot of rules.
The first message to trainorders today has a first-person account of doing the procedure, unassisted by crew [in the US]
