Aluminum covered hoppers, what happened to them?

I had mostly forgotten about the aluminum covered hopper expiraments in the 90's... Until I saw one today mixed in with a cut of cars in Tacoma.

As I recall, BN had some, Cargil had others( unit trains on the UP) and a maybe a leasing company wih blue ends? This one was one of the blue enders, but too far away to make out reporting marks.

Are there many of these left? Maybe running around out east? Why not as successful as the ubiquitous aluminum bathtub coal gon?
