Hoosac Tunnel

Grew up in West Mass; Hoosac Tunnel was/is a cool place to hang out, except for the lack of traffic. It is as eerie as it looks in the video, a cool, damp, dank breeze wafting out of the tunnel portal. There are lots of tales of ghosts working in the tunnel. Right across the Deerfield River from the east portal of the tunnel was the old Hoot, Toot and Whistle, a short line that served western Vermont. The HT&W is 40/50 years gone, but I believe the interchange yard tracks are still there. Somewhere along the line, the B&M electrified the tunnel because the central shaft fan couldn't handle the exhausts of the "modern" steam locomotives. One of the tunnel ghosts is that of a brakeman who lost his head to an oncoming train when he stuck his head out of the locomotive window. The electric catenary is likewise long gone, but the supporting towers are still in place.
