A contrast of centuries -

Enjoy a photo from the (recent) archives featuring Amtrak's Acela
(debuting December, 2000) taken a couple of years back at Marcus
Hook, PA at the site of the Sunoco Oil refinery, established in
1901 when Joseph Newton Pew (go figure) was purchased 82 acres for
$45,000 to begin processing the crude found in the southern state.)

Taken at dusk against the silhouetted backdrop of the refinery on
April 4th, 2011.

The plant was recently idled and shut down when Sunoco left the
refinery business but in May of this year it was reopened by a
new subsidiary company called Sunoco Logistics. The pipeline and
terminal company plans to repurpose the refinery as a hub for
shipping liquid fuels produced from natural-gas drilling in the
Marcellus and Utica Shales.

Maybe well see some more freights, too!

The Reading Railroad would've liked this project...
