Suicide East of Spokane

Several of us were listening around 9pm Saturday night when the news came over the radio that a westbound BNSF coal train had hit a girl east of Spokane around MP 55-56. The crews description was that the girl had her head to the rail as the train approached, but then seemed to back away....but not in time. A gruesome "thud" foretelled the obvious. Police found the body between the tracks and Trent Rd just east of the Starr Rd overpass (Newman Lake turnoff/Moab Jct). The crew sounded distressed as they asked for the dispatcher to call for paramedics. The head end of the train had stopped just 30 some cars beyond the overpass, suggesting that they likely had applied the brakes prior to hitting the girl. It would be almost three hours before trains could move past the scene on the south main (main #2). This may delay Amtrak #8 trying to leave Spokane. #7 was almost 6 hours down already and likely won't be affected. I feel sorry for the crew, as this is just about a rail's worst nightmare.
