It was one of the cold storage warehouses - often locally referred to as "chicken houses" - in West Oakland. Inbound frozen meets in reefers and sometimes non-perishable commodities in box cars were unloaded and transfered to trucks or containers, some of which were shipped overseas. I've forgotten the name of this particular one, but it might've been Unicold, which eventually relocated their facility further west into what's now more or less the middle of the Oakland International Gateway. They still receive inbound loads by rail, and are switched by UP's Emeryville Switcher.
Maybe someone with a better memory than mine can give you some additional information.
