Diversification is a good idea......... If you have a clue as to what other businesses you want to add to the mix. SP should have concentrated on being a railroad instead of trying to be a communications mogul and real estate mogul and pipeline mogul while ignoring the root business. Spread yourself too thin and someone comes along and paints all your stuff yellow and grey.
