There is a new thread out on the steam page of Train Orders..."The Last 3 Cab-Forward Train On The Modoc".
The poster mentions that Guy Dunscomb and John Hungerford were the participants. There was a third gentleman along for this venture & it was Ed Ripley.
The train ran as 1-553 so it most certainly was NOT heading for Alturas, but to Wendel from Alturas.
I can say this with certainty as I have had John Hungerford's slide collection for about the last 20 years and am familiar with just what is in there.
Complete color coverage of this trip is in the recently published SOUTHERN PACIFIC'S GOLDEN EMPIRE 1954-1958 by SPH&TS.
On the prior day, the 3 fans stopped by Westwood and also photographed FGS 2-8-2 104 under steam and working.
Tom Dill has told me that he believes that there was a later multiple AC operation on the Modoc. While no photos seem to have surfaced, it certained could have happened. Tom has earned a reputation for accuracy and thoroughness
My post here is not intended to ruffle feathers, but to try to keep history straight.
