I've heard or read somewhere that the fills on the line are tailings from the copper mines in Butte. The line was built pretty late in the game. It would probably be a real chore doing environmental cleanup if the line was officially abandoned.

Also, you'll note that disuse of the line (and ownership by BNSF) keeps MRL from connecting with UP at Silver Bow.
