Travels With Frank-4 (CP&LT)

Continuing with the late Frank Saarni's railfanning trips, here is the next one in his notebook. I recently noticed that it is out of sequence, but since it was typed, I accept it as accurate. There are also a couple of equipment notes that come under question later.

On 10-2-48 Frank took SP train 224 from Berkeley to Sacramento behind Pacific 2485.

The next day, he rode the cab of X1E from Placerville to Camino on the Camino, Placerville and Lake Tahoe Ry. as the old 3T Shay took the empties back up the hill.

Later that day, Frank rode SP train 518 from Diamond Springs back east to Placerville behind
Consolidation 2598.

The next day, the same engine was at the head end of number 519 from Placerville to Evans (Elvas?) Later that day, he took 223 back home to Berkeley behind the same Pacific as he rode east on two days earlier, 2485.

Engines seen:

Port Costa- Consolidations 2543, 2585 and 2710, Moguls 1701, 1730 and 1825, Mountain 4334 and
heavy Mikado 3300
Sacramento- WP engines Consolidations 3, 35, 65, 63, 27, 56, 32 and 42, Mikados 323, 326, 319
and 307, 0-6-0 switchers 151 and 156
Camino- Standard gauge 3T Shays 1 and 2
Camino- Narrow gauge 1,2,3,5 and 7. 2,3,5 and 7 were 2T Shays. 1 should have been a 2T Heisler,
but Polkinghorn's book shows it as having been cut up in 1942.
Diamond Springs- Diamond and Caldor narrow gauge Shays 4,6,7 and railcar 5
