When I came to Spokane in 1977 westbounds ran via the ex NP line thru Empire and eastbounds via the ex SP&S thru Overlook. Helpers were usually Fs or geeps (including my personal favorite GP7 BN 1634 ex NP 560) and they shoved on the rear, often cutting off on the fly at the top of the hill between Marshall and Cheney. These helpers would often wait for their next shove at Sunset Jct. I once got a roundtrip cab ride with my 2 young boys in the helper.
About 1981 BN did a directional reverse (wb on SP&S & eb on NP) and this was the end of the helpers.
It is common knowledge that at the time of the merger, the older NP Fs and geeps were in much better mechanical condition than their GN counterparts. NP would have continued to buy F9s if EMD would have built them.
