64 volt batteries charge at 72-74 volts.
There is a full locomotive size battery box, but it only has smaller commercial batteries in it. The 64 vdc system is for the propulsion control circuits and headlights, plus a dc convertor supplies 12-15 vdc for the obsolete electronics for the engine/propulsion control units.
These things eat batteries. ODOT used to top off the batteries with a garden hose. At Elgin, the batteries often went dead between the odd uses, then would freeze over the winter. I imagine the batteries will have to be replaced, again, by INPR if/when they get there.
