Frank Saarni's last pay trip on the GN was on 8-21-44.

He left K Falls for home on 8-23 in the cab of GN 3351, departing at 1440 and arriving Bieber at 1730.

At 0800 on the 24th, he rode the cab of WP 2-6-6-2 210 out of Bieber on train X210W and arrived Keddie at 1430. Noteworthy here was that there were 3 other "baby mallets" on the train as helpers; 205, 209 and 201. That's a combined t.e. of about 320,000 lbs. 205 and 209 were added from Bieber to Halls Flat while the 201 was a through helper.

From Keddie, Frank rode the cab of WP 2-8-8-2 255 on X255E to Portola arriving there at 1830 where Frank stayed the night.

The next morning at 0800, Frank rode Mikado 326 on X326W to Oroville. Frank said that they let him fire the entire trip. They got to Oroville at 1650 and Frank found Mikado 306 heading for Stockton, so he asked for a ride in the cab and was again granted his request.. They arrived Stockton at 2200 where Frank found lodging for the night.

He was up early the next morning and left Stockton at 0500 on X46W behind a WP Consolidation. From Stockton to Altamont, they had sister Consolidation 51 as a helper and got to Oakland at 1000 on the 26th ending his almost month long adventure.

Frank felt that his upcoming induction into the Army had a lot to do with his riding cabs on this trip.
