Mike, you did a nice writeup on Don Edmisten's life. He sounds like a quality railroader and a wonderful guy to know.
What caught my eye was your mention of the NYC Management Training Program. In 1965 as a fresh college grad with an eye toward a railroad career, I applied to the NYC and got an interview and a nice round trip train trip to the big apple. Rode the NP-CB&Q (Mainstreeter) to Chicago and NYC (Wolverine via Detroit) east. I had a decent interview with them but didn't get any offer out of it. On the return leg of my trip I interviewed in Chicago with both the Rock Island and the EJ&E and accepted a job with the Rock Island. This resulted in one of the more interesting and enjoyable 4 years of my life. Thankfully, I left the Rock before it really began to fall apart.
