Wow, you've done it again! A fantastic image and a very significant one at that.
483 is tacking a caboose on what is probably the last eastbound revenue freight from Chama to Alamosa. K36 484 and K37 498 had the honors that day. That happened on August 29th.
Later the same day, 483 took the last westbound freight from Chama to Durango. A couple of days later 483 hauled the last train on the Farmington Branch. That ended up being the very last revenue freight on the narrow gauge.
After that, a few trains were run for movie work and to move equipment between Alamosa and Durango, but those were all done by December. The D&RGW never ran any salvage trains, rather leaving cars in various places to be scrapped later. Some of this equipment ended up on the C&TS and D&S railroads. Removal of the rails began in 1970.
