In 1958, the M-80 was struck by a logging truck in Willits. She was rebuilt with the result that she lost her Mack "nose" and her baggage compartment. In September, 1964 the M-100 overlooked a "meet" and ran head on into the M-80, which had been chartered to the Airline Pilots Association. While there were a few serious injuries, there were no fatalities. As result of that accident, the M-80 was scrapped. The PLA had the last complete trip with the M-80 a week before that accident.
The M-80 was used on numerous trips over the California Western in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Because of that fact, the PLA chose to have its first trips over the railroad using the M-200, which was the only "skunk" that had not been rebuilt. She later was sold (in 1975)to the PLA and is currently at Niles Canyon.
