Time to get real. The building has history but isnt historical. Yes its a wood frame building..... with a new east end that was replaced after the fire. Inside its had a heavy remodel with the food court, and other sit down places to eat. Entrances have been modified and the ST terminal with loading ramps etc installed. Stairways and an elevator.
Over time there has been no real effort to maintain anything other than the name and a sort of original look to the outside. Inside in most places you can tell it was an open store house. If it was not for the early railroad photos around the inside who would know?...other than railfans. The shine is off the FreightHouse Square as a place to do business and I am sure the owner is happy to get a long term lease with Amtrak/ST.
Latest info I have seen is an agreement to consider the depot on the east end with part of the load/unload ramp on the new two track bridge being planned to replace the one track wood pile bridge. The big complaint from people commenting is the blocking of D street when the train is at the depot. Having it stop on the east might allow the crossing gates to be up. In early planning the prefered location for the depot was the west end...thus, stopped trains would block D and I think C streets
